Yugoslavian Weaving Learning Doily

A Learning Doily in Yugoslavian Weaving

This doily was designed to introduce students to Yugoslavian Weaving. Little is known of the origin of this technique, which is often mistaken for Swedish Weaving. It is characterized by strongly contrasting color choices, thread that is visible from both sides of the project, and the use of short thread lengths.

If you appreciate the look of Swedish Weaving but have difficulty in finding the floats, then this beginner level class will have special appeal to you. More advanced students will find this technique to be easy on the eyes, and quite relaxing to stitch (once the first row is in place.)

The colors found in a single skein of watercolors (Nefretiti) were used as the basis for this 8" x 8" doily, which was worked on 14 count Fiddlers Lite. The kit also includes pearl cottons and a complete instruction booklet. The charts are provided in color, with each thread path shown in a separate color, making the stitching rhythm easier to follow.

This small learning project will introduce the student to several factors found in this form of needlework, including: the three ways of turning corners and how different stitch progressions can be used to form angles of different shapes.

To finish the project, the Nun's stitch edging was selected. Factors to consider in selecting a method of hand finishing will be discussed in class. Tips and pointers on how to produce a perfect edging will be discussed in class.

Student supplies to bring to class: Standard stitching tools, hoop or q-snaps (optional).

This class will be held:

Great Lakes Regional Seminar, Dearborn, MI
Sunday, April 26th, 2009.
