Ukrainian Nyzynka Boxtop

Ukrainian Nyzynka workshop

Specifics about the class:

Ukrainian Nyzynka is a colorful embroidery technique originating in the Carpathian Mountains. To describe Nyz as double layered pattern darning makes this technique sound easy to master. In practice, it is one of the most challenging of the Ethnic techniques, which explains why is it seldom seen and rarely taught.

The first layer is stitched from the underside of the fabric (the word Nyzynka translates into "from the underneath.") This layer is stitched with black threads on white linen. The second layer (called "flowering" by the Ukrainians) is where the color is added. This layer is stitched so that the colored threads are visible only from the face of the project.

For any embroiderer looking for a new stitching experience, this workshop will provide a unique challenge. The student will learn the traditional methods used to stitch this technique, how to work with multiple design bands in a single project, and how to complete the stitching for an open-ended band.

This will be a two-day class. During the first day, we will learn the technique by working a practice bookmark on 19-count cork linen. Following a discussion on selecting and combining patterns, each student will select and combine designs for their own unique project. Please bring the dimensions of your project to class with you, so we can make sure the selected designs will fit inside the area available. The student material contains a variety of alternative patterns, or the class model can be duplicated exactly, if preferred.

During day two, we will begin to explore the flowering processes. For museum quality work, the second layer is stitched so that the colored threads are visible only from the face of the project. This method of adding color will be demonstrated in class. However, because the reverse of this project will not be visible, the class will also learn the service quality approach to coloring as well.

The final step is unifying the bands with the multi-colored plait stitch. Instructions for this stitch are also included in the instructional material.

Time permitting, a lecture on the common characteristics found in ethnic / folk art traditions will be presented. In addition, a brief discussion of Ukrainian embroidery forms will be presented.

A kit will be provided with the fibers selected from the traditional Ukrainian colors used for this technique. Because the thread customarily used for Ukrainian embroidery is no longer manufactured, Impressions, Pearl Cotton and mandarin floss will be used for the stitching. The ground fabric used is 28 count Glasgow Linen. The class model was finished as a boxtop, but the band could also be finished as a tray insert or book cover.

Student should bring to class: Standard stitching tools, a flat-edged ruler or other straight edge, and a magnetic pattern holder (optional.)

This class will be held:

Great Lakes Regional Seminar, Dearborn, MI
Monday and Tuesday, April 27th – 28th, 2009.
